Shanghai Walks for Uganda

We celebrated United Nations Day on October 22.
We began the day by visiting booths from different countries. You will see some of us dressed in our National Costumes. Can you guess where they are from?

It was a lovely autumn day.
Our whole elementary school, teachers, parents, principals and our superintendent came out to walk with us.

We walked round our track. Four times around the track makes one mile. We all walked between 2 to 3 miles. We calculated that we would have to walk around our track 24 times to walk for six miles. That would take at least two hours!

Thanks to all the classes, teachers, and parents that came out with us

What questions do you have for our Shanghai Walk for Uganda?

Dear Team Toa,
Your walk looked like so much fun! I would have loved to be there! Something I really liked was that a lot of people like the superintendent walked with you. I also like the music.
I have some questions:
Did you walk or run?

What was your favorite part of the run/walk?

What was the temperature?

How long did the superintendent walk with you?

Can you tell me something more about United Nations Day?
Please write back!

Warmest Regards,

Jamie(Mrs. Ranney's student in California)

Dear Team Toa,
I am from Mrs.Ranney's class in California. My name is Carly. I really liked your slide show! I didn't have a favorite part though because I liked all of it so much. I have some questions for you.

Did you like your walk?

Was it hot or cold?

Did you get tired from walking three miles?

Did you drink lots of water?

What was your favorite part of your walk?

Do you know how much water everyone drank in all?

I liked the fact that everyone tried and didn't give up.
Did everyone wear the right shoes for the walk?

Your Friend,
Carly

Dear Shanghai students,
I liked your slide show.
Do you think three miles is a lot or not? I liked the music. Did you like the music or not? Do you think we got them a lot of money or not? Do you think we got enough money to get the school in Uganda a playground? When you did the walk was it hilly? Did you have a water break? When did you start and when did you end?

Dear Team Toa,

I really loved your slide show.
I liked It because the music was great. I am from Mrs Ranney's class.
I think it was a great thing to team up and raise some money for Uganda. I noticed that in your slide show you said "some people even did three laps" and everyone from our class did
do three laps.

Dear Team Toa,

I loved your walk! I liked your music. I noticed that your walk was at your school. Our school walked in the community.

I have some questions:

You were on flat surface.
Did you run?

Did you wear your school shoes

Dear Team Toa,

It was fantastic to see you all complete your walk/run! It looked like everyone had a great time!

I noticed you completed your walk/run on an athletic track. Is that track at your school?

I also saw that you measure distance in miles. We measure distance in kilometres. Just so you know, 1 mile = 1.6 kilometres. Interesting!

We don't have a school superintendant, but we have a principal. Is it the same thing? Is a superintendant the person in charge of the school?

Congratulations on a great effort in your walk/run!

Miss Jordan

Congratulations, Team Toa!
I was very impressed with your wonderful slide show. Of particular interest to me was the United Nations Day celebration. I enjoyed seeing your native costumes and the booth for Uganda. How great it was that so many other classes and even the principal and superintendent joined in!
It was also interesting that you calculated the number of laps it would take to walk 6 miles!
I'm so glad that all of us had great walking weather.
What did each of you enjoy most about the day?
I would also like to hear more about your United Nations Day and how you celebrated it!
Cheers,
Mrs. Ranney

Dear Team Toa,

I l♥ved your stupendous video! Your music sounded great. If I was there, I would have had a lot of fun! I noticed that you have a track. We don't have a track. I loved how you sang the "Hello song". Did you sing any other songs? Was the climate nice?

Dear Team Toa,

I think your slideshow was wonderful! You did a good job. I have some questions for you:

1. Who is Adrienne, the person in the picture you carried?
2. Do a lot of schools have big tracks like yours? We don't have one, but my brother's high school does.

Warmly,
Ella in Mrs. Ranney's class

Wow! I loved all the comments. We had SO much fun on our walk. I thought an hour would be a long time but it went by so quickly. I think it wouldn't be so fun if we had to walk every day though!

@ Jamie
Our superintendent did one lap of the track. He walked the opposite way around so he got to see everyone.

@ Carly
Everyone took their water bottles with them. We even took our snacks to eat on the way!

@ Shawn
We had a lot of fun. We skipped, hopped, ran, jumped, walked backwards, and sang songs.

@ Edo
We didn't stop to have water. We all carried our water bottles or just put them at the side of the track. We did need to drink a lot though. Our whole elementary school came out so that is more than 400 students!

@ Gal
I thought 3 miles was a long way! We started just after 10 o'clock and finished at 11 o'clock. We only walked on our track so there were no hills.

@ Mikayla
We enjoyed singing the Hello song. we sang hello in many different ways too. We added In New Zealand they say Kia Ora, in Samoa they say Talofa.

@ Aidan
Our booth was great. We had a money jar which was filled with money by the end of the day!

@ Grace
Isn't it cool that both you and we did three laps. Imagine how much we all walked together!

@ Justin
The weather was warm. Around 24 degrees Celsius (I don't know what that is in Fahrenheit). We didn't take breaks, we just walked and drank our water and walked some more. It sure was tiring!

@ Philip
May of our students were dressed in their National costume but we remembered to bring walking clothes and yes, we had walking shoes.

@ Emily
Aren't the costumes cool. I especially like the Korean dress.

@ Jazmin
Thanks for your comment. I think we all had great slide shows. All different and all good!

@ Ryan
I really liked your word stupendous!
Our track is in our high school which is on our school grounds.

@ Ella
Adrienne was sick the day of our walk and she was so sad to be missing out, so we got a photo of her and carried it around for the day. She enjoyed seeing photos of herself throughout the day

Whew! That's a BIG comment.
Thanks for all your feedback my blogging buddies.

Dear Miss Jordan

I really liked seeing all the different slide shows. We had a fantastic time.

We used our high school track at our school. We don't really have a lot of other areas to walk outside of our school.

SAS has six schools on two different campuses so at our campus there is an elementary, middle, and high school. Each school has a principal. The superintendent looks after all the schools. (we used the high school track!)

I can't wait to see how much money we raised. I am sure we have raised enough for the land-it's very exciting.

Dear Mrs. Ranney

We had so much fun on Friday. Every child in our school from PreK4 up through 5th grade participated.

United Nations Day is celebrated around the world on October 24. We celebrate it every year at our school so the walk fit in well with the time. Students dress in their national costume. There are different booths to represent different countries (all organized by our wonderful parents). It is all so much fun.

I really enjoyed all the slide shows and seeing the different communities.

Dear Team Toa,

We enjoyed watching your slide show and thinking about going around the track. We just started multiplication today, and we noticed we could use some skip counting with the laps to get miles. We talked about: 4 laps being a mile, 8 laps being two miles, and 12 laps being three miles... It's fun to find patterns!

You mentioned that people dressed up in their national costumes. We're curious, where are people from? Which countries were represented?

Also, we have been talking about the American school system. To my knowledge, that means the parents are from America, but are working overseas? Am I correct? If so, what kinds of jobs do people have? How long do many families stay?

We have lots of questions! :-)

Mrs. Y♥llis and class

Dear Team Toa,

We were all very excited to see what your walk was like. Our first reaction was that you are lucky to have such a nice, big track. Some of us said it looked like an Olympic track.

We also really enjoyed seeing the cool shoelaces and the different outfits for United Nations Day. Some of us wondered if there was a booth for the United States.

It is great that so many different classes got involved with the fund-raising! I bet the whole school felt good about joining together to help out. It is a great feeling to do things for other people!

Congratulations!

From,
Mr. Salsich
