A Day in the Life of an Australian Student

The Ugandan Global Project has been launched and everyone in 2KM and 2KJ are really excited about being involved in such a wonderful project.

One terrific part of this project is learning about all of the different classes involved. It is great to compare what things are like in Australia, America, China and of course, Uganda! We thought we would share what a day in the life of an Australian student is like.

Check out our presentation below to see what students in 2KM and 2KJ experience every day...

Please tell us...

What did you think of our day?

How is your day similar to our day?

How is your day different to our day?
Do you have any questions about school in Australia?

Dear UGP members,

What a great post for people to learn about a day in the life of an Australian student. I always have a lot of fun at school. My favourite subjects at school are Sport and Indonesian. It's really fun to learn a new language.

My great teacher Miss Jordan, helps me learn every day and I become very smart with the help of some school friends.

If you have any questions I'm happy to answer!

Your pal,
Millie!

Dear UGP members, I really enjoy going to school!!! Sport is really really good for you because you get fit and healthy. Hi my name is Jazmin I live in Victoria, Australia I'm in 2KJ!! My favourite part in School is going to computer's with Mr. Stribley!! Sometimes after school I get to go to a friend's house for a couple of hours. I also get something to eat!! Sometimes I like to stay home and see my family or maybe to relax!! Even sometimes I get to sleep at a friends house on Friday or Saturday night.
Bye for now,

Dear UGP Australian Friends,
What a wonderful slide show about a typical day you created! I can't wait to show it to my class tomorrow.
I noticed many similarities between my students and you and some differences too. I will let the students comment and tell you about them.
I particularly enjoyed hearing what you eat at meals and snacks. The most intriguing thing to me was the fact that one of your specialist subjects is Indonesian! I would love to hear more about that!
Your friend,
Mrs. Ranney in the USA

Miss Jordan said...

Dear Mrs Ranney,

Thanks for the comment! It was difficult to select just a few different foods we eat for snacks and meals. We eat lots of different types of foods! I should have mentioned vegemite which is a very popular Australian food we spread on our toast. Yum! Have you heard of vegemite?

The students really enjoy learning Indonesian at school. We have a weekly one hour lesson but Miss McGeady and I try to use some Indonesian in the classroom too. The students learn Indonesian words and songs.

When I was in high school I learnt German! I can still remember some words and phrases.

Do you have a language your students learn at your school?

Miss Jordan

Dear 2KM and 2KJ,

It is really cool how you put together all that information on the slideshow. It was so much fun learning about a day in the life of an Australian student!

We think it is interesting that you eat lunch in your classroom. We eat lunch in the cafeteria with the whole third grade.

We do have some questions for you:
What country does Indonesian come from? We don't learn another language in school, but some of us study languages in after school programs. We learn French, Spanish, and Chinese.

What sports do you like to play the most, and what is netball?

What is a biscuit? Is it like a cookie?

Thanks for sharing your day with us! We can't wait to tell you about our day in Connecticut.

From,
Mr. Salsich's students

@ Mr Salsich students,

Thanks for your awesome comment!
Yes I think school is great because you can learn about all different things!!!

Yeah we have 10 minutes to eat our lunch then we have to go out to play! Also you mentioned that you don't know what Netball is, Netball is a kind of sport that lots of girls like to play it's kind of like Basketball.

Indonesia is a country just abouve Australia, it sounds like you learn different kind of launguideges! Yes a Biscut is kind of like a Cookie but you can put Buscuts in dip and cheese.

Now I have some questions for you,
What is your school called?
Do you have a canteen?
What kind of
sports do you play?

If you have anymore questions for me I am happy to anwer them!

Netball is a sport that is popular in Australia. You have a big court, as big as a Basketball court. In Netball we have two teams, each team has seven players and we don't have a back board when we shoot.

I wish I could learn a different language like you learn Indonesian. We learned how to write a little Chinese.

I have some questions for you:
When you wrote jelly did you mean jell-o?
What is your least favorite part about school?

Dear Ms. McGeady and class,

My name is Tucker and I'm in Mrs. Yollis' class. I am looking forward to the walk to raise money for the Ugandan kids.

There are some similarities between kids in Australia and kids in the United States. We both do homework after school. We both play outside and do computers.

There are also some differences between us. We have a shorter lunch time than you. You have a longer day of school than we do. We spell some words differently--color/colour, flavor/flavour, favorite/favourite and learned/learnt.

Here are some questions for you.
I've heard my name means something in Australia. What does Tucker mean?

Do you have Alphasmarts (a small computer that helps you learn keyboarding)?

Thanks for your response! Yes, I have heard of and even tried vegemite! I must admit that I don't love it, but I do love to spread other things on toast!
I was very interested to learn that you studied German in high school. One of my daughters recently lived in Germany for two years, and I was able to visit her there last Christmas. I did learn a few German words during my visit. In high school, I studied Latin, which is not really a conversational language!
Since California is so close to Mexico, it is very common for students here to study Spanish. At our school, we do not formally study a foreign language, but Mrs. Yollis and I usually teach our students a little Spanish each year.
I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know you and your delightful, enthusiastic students!

Dear 2KM and 2KJ,
I like your slideshow. I have a few questions. How long does it take to fly from Australia to Indonesia? My mom says many Australians go there for vacation. Also what type of candy is a lolly? We have lollypops here which is like a hard candy on a stick.

@ Ben, thank you for your comment.

To answer your question, it takes about 8 hours to fly to Indonesia. Bali which is an Indonesian island is a very popular holiday destination for Australians. When Australians go overseas they also like to visit Fiji and New Zealand because they are not too far away.

All our sweet candy is called lollies. We have lollipops too. When I was in America in 2007 I noticed some of the candy/lollies/chocolate is very different in the two countries. I like party mix lollies. You get a mix of things like bananas, strawberry and cream, jelly babies, raspberries and more!
