A Day in the Life of a California Student

One terrific part of this project is learning about all of the different classes involved. It is great to compare what things are like in Australia, America, China and of course, Uganda!

Here is a slide show about a day in the life of a student in California, America.

A Day in the Life: California on PhotoPeach

How is our day like your day?

Do you notice any differences?

If you have a question, please ask! We'd love to answer using a quality comment!

Dear Mrs Yollis and Mrs Ranney,

Your slide show was
fantastic!
It was very interesting because some parts of your day are a little different to ours.

Here is two questions for you,

Why do you finish your day at 2:21
instead of 2:20?

What is tetherball?

Dear Mrs Yollis and Mrs Ranney,

The post is fabulous. I think it is going to be fun to learn about life of a Californian student.

I have a difference: You put your bags outside and we put our bags inside.

A similaritie is:
That your teacher do the roll. My teacher also does the roll.

Tetherball is a ball on a string. The string and ball are attached to a long metal pole. The ball is the size of a soccer ball. We hit the ball back and forth around the pole. Whoever makes the ball go all the way around the pole wins as the rope is tied up.

Aidan (from Mrs. Ranney's class)

@ Brooke,

It is really fun when Mrs. Yollis lets us write on our desks. We have done it 2 times. Our class cleans the desks by not using permanent marker and at the end we wipe with clorox wipes. What are some differences about your day?

Dear UPG members,
This is Carly and Jamie. We are from Mrs. Ranney's class in California.
@Leah We don't really know why we get out at 2:21 instead of 2:20. If we find out we will tell you.
@Brooke do you mean the writing on our desks? If you do mean the writing on our desks we use whiteboard markers and then we erase the writing.
@Kobi We don't learn a language but we think it's awesome that you do.
@Emily Last year in second grade in Mr.Larkin's class we put our backpacks inside for about half the year and only on rainy days this year.
@Spener We think it is amazing that even though we live in different countries we still have some similarities.
We're enjoying learning about Uganda, China, Connecticut, and Australia.
We love blogging and we are delighted to be a part about the Ugandan Global Project!

Yours Truly,
Carly and Jamie

Dear Brooke,

I am happy that you enjoyed our post about a day in the life of a student in California.

In order to answer your question, I had to look up the word texta. In the United States, we call them markers. We use whiteboard erasers to erase the markers.

Sincerely,
Hannah

Dear Mrs Yollis
We found both similarities and differences about our typical day:
We use materials to help us understand maths problems (but we sometimes call it Numeracy time).
We spend time Reading and Writing each day.
We also have Social Studies and Science, Technology and Health, but we call it Topic.
Class starts at 8.50am, although the first children start to arrive soon after 8am, as many come on the bus. Our school day ends at 3pm.

Once a week we also have Dance or Drama, Visual Arts, Music and Library.

We keep our bags inside as we get a lot of rain on the West Coast of New Zealand.

Most children bring a packed lunch from home, although we can also order food (sushi or ham rolls or mini-burgers etc) from a local shop).

We think that finishing at 2.21pm would give us more time to play and do after-school activities.

Mrs McKenzie wonders how early the teachers need to get to school to prepare for their day? (She goes to school at 7.30am).

Dear UGP,

It's cool how you get two recesses.
We only have one and we don't eat lunch outside.

Our teacher does not ask what we want for lunch.

How long is your 10:00 recess. What is the most popular game at recess?

But I have one question: What are the things you used
for typing practice. And how many minutes do you
have for recess all together?

Dear California buddies,

How long is your first recess and how long is your second? You are so lucky because you get to spend a lot of time outside. We don`t spend ANY time outside besides our 30 minute recess. Being in your school sounds like a lot of fun!

Here is a question for you,

Do you like getting out of school at 2:20, or would rather go into school later, at 9:00 like we do?

Happy blogging!

Thanks for your lovely comment, including a compliment! I really enjoyed your Day in the Life post as well. It is interesting to compare our lives.
I actually like starting school earlier and getting out earlier. I am a morning person, so getting up early works well for me!
I would love to know more about how you use your ipods in class.

Dear Mrs Yollis, Mrs Ranney and students,

I really enjoyed watching your "day in the life of a Californian student" slideshow. It was great to see your daily routines and to compare your day to our school day here in Australia.

Most of the questions I had about your day have already been asked by other students and you are all doing a fantastic job of answering our questions.

I noticed you like to eat cereal for breakfast. So do I! I usually eat Special K with muesli. What breakfast cereals are popular with you?

Happy Blogging!

Best wishes,
Miss Jordan

Jamie said...

Dear Miss Jordan,
My name is Jamie and I am in Mrs. Ranney's class in Califonia. In the morning when I have cereal for breakfast I have Cherrios. That's my favorite cereal. I have a question.
What's your favorite breakfast?

Your Friend,
Jamie

Miss Jordan said...

@ Jamie - Thanks for your reply. I have never eaten Cheerios before but I just asked a couple of students and we do have them here in Australia. They are shaped like rings.

My favourite breakfast is a big bowl of Special K and muesli with milk. I also love vegemite on toast but I usually have cereal.

Best wishes,
Miss Jordan

Mrs. Ranney said...

@Miss Jordan,
I am also a big cereal fan. I eat oatmeal just about every morning. On my oatmeal I always put cottage cheese or yogurt and some kind of fruit. Muesli is a cereal I enjoy as well!
@Jamie,you are continuing to be a great blogging role model! Great job keeping the conversation going!
Best to both of you,
Mrs. Ranney

Jamie said...

Dear Miss Jordan,
I thought they would have Cherrios in Australia. Some other popular cereals are Cinnomon Toast Crunch, Fruit Loops, and Fiber One (For adults). I have some questions:
What is muesli?
What is vegiemite?
What is the population in Australia?

Dear Blogging Buddies,

@Sam C. and Emmett in Mr. Salsich's class, if it rains we have rainy day schedule. On a rainy day schedule we take our backpacks inside. We also eat and play inside. Sometimes we even watch a movie. But in Southern California there is barely any rain!

What happens to your schedule when you have rain?

Warmly,

Ella in Mrs. Ranney's class

Dear Alexandra,
The things we use for typing practice are called Alpha Smarts. They are like mini computers except they don't have internet and they have an automatic typing program.

Dear Tyler D.and Sam K.,
Handball is a game that you play with at least three people. You play handball by hitting the handball and it has to touch the wall. It must bounce only once before touching the wall.

Regards,

Mikayla

Dear UGP members,

It is Carly and Jamie from Mrs.Ranney's class in California.
@Tyler D. and Sam K. If it is raining, we bring our backpacks inside. Our recess is 20 minutes long. There is no most popular game at our school. Everybody likes all the games equally. The game handball is a game where we use a rubber ball and we hit it against the wall. We have to make it bounce first before it hits the wall. After it hits the wall, we hit it without letting it bounce or after it bounces once on the ground. If you do belive that you can win then you will be victorious.
@Ben and Alexa We(Jamie and Carly) normally write one or two comments a day.

Dear UGP,
@Andrew I don't know if the Ugandan kids will get a family if they don't have one. What other information about our school do you want to know?
@Gal I like Mrs. Ranney's class because she let's us play silent speed ball and some other games. My favorite thing is the typing. I especially like the Alphasmarts. I like the games better then the work but I like reading more than both the work and games. Do you like the work or games more?

Warmly,
Jamie
