A Day in The Life of a Connecticut Student

It has been so interesting learning about what a school day is like for students in Australia, California, and Uganda! There are many differences, but also a lot of similarities.

Here is a slideshow to give you an idea of what a typical day is like for students in Mr. Salsich's class in Connecticut, USA

Please tell us...

What did you think of our day?

How is your day similar to our day?

How is your day different to our day?

Do you have any questions about our school day?

Dear Mr Salsich and class,

Wow! I just loved your "day in the life of a Conneticut student" slideshow! I learnt so many things about your day!

There were lots of similarities but also lots of differences too. I am interested to know what your "morning assignment" is that you do each day? Could you tell me a little about that?

You certainly look like you have a great time at school together.

Keep up the great work!

Your friend,
Miss Jordan

Dear Mr. Salsich and class,

I think that a day in the life of a Connecticut student is similar to a day in a life of a California student.
Here are some similarities: We both have recess for 25 minutes and we both have music classes. Some differences are: You eat in a cafeteria during lunch while we eat outside. Your students get to play after they eat lunch but we play first and then eat our lunch.

What is your favorite part about school? Here are a couple of questions for Mr. Salsich. How long have you been teaching? Have you always taught the same grade?

Warmly,

Grace
(Mrs. Yollis' student)

Dear Mr. Salsich,

I loved our new post about "Day in the life of a Connecticut student." I especially liked when I was on the silent reading slide.

I think we are lucky to have a big playground because the Uganda students have a very small playground. I hope we can save their playground.

Derek in Mr. Salsich's class.

Dear Mr. Salsich and Class,
What a great slide show you made about "The Day in the Life of a Connecticut Student!" We noticed that there were some differences and a lot of similarities to our day. One difference is the way your teacher takes roll. Another difference is that you use a Smartboard, which we do not have. We sure wish we did! One more difference is that you use laptops in your class, another item we wish we had! A similarity we observed is that you have recess before lunch at 12:15 just like we do. Another one is that we have Silent Reading right after lunch, just like you! Lastly we noticed that you have math at about the same time we do.
Here are a couple of questions we have:
What kinds of books do you like to read for Silent Reading?
What book series do you enjoy?
Thank you again for such a great slide show. We will definitely be writing more comments on our own!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ranney and Class

Dear Mr.Salsich and Class,
Your slide show was exquisite!
We have some questions:

What is your favorite baseball team?
What do like about Halloween?
Do you like school?
What is your favorite sport?
Will you tell us some more information?
Warmly,
Justin and Aidan

Dear Mr Salsich and Class,

Your slideshow was great!

Your day is a little bit different to ours. We don't usually do maths for the first thing of our day. We usually do Reading Groups.

We have Brain Food at 10:00. Brain Food is where you have fruit or Vegetables.

We don't do homework. What do you do for your homework? In stead of doing homework we do reading. We have to read 4 or more times or We don't get Free Time on Friday.

The big difference is that you have a Cafeteria and we have a Canteen. We usually bring our sandwiches but we sometimes have a lunch order. We have tried Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before but they're not very popular in Australia.

We have Independent reading instead is Silent Reading.

Dear Mrs. Salsich and class,

Wow! Your day is quite stupendous! I leaned a lot about your day. I noticed some similarities. You call it silent reading and we do too. We both have 25 minutes of silent reading. I also noticed some differences. You eat your lunch inside and we eat it outside. Also I noticed that you have Smart board and we don't. I think it was very smart of Mr. Salsich to just look whose chair is not down. I am very interested in your Smart board. What is it like?
I do karate after school too. They are strict there. I am a purple belt. What belt are you?
We do not have a pasta day in our cafeteria though, we do have a corn dog day. I have some questions for you. Do you have Alpha smarts? (a miniature keyboard to help you type faster). Do you have reading counts? (a reading game). It looks like you have a wonderful time at school! Keep up the great work!

Ryan (Mrs. Yollis's student) ♠ ♥

@ Grace,

Thank you for that great comment! You are right, there are a lot of similarities between our classes. Another difference, though, is that you start and finish school about an hour earlier than we do. School doesn't end here until 3:25

To answer your fantastic questions; I have been teaching for five years and I have always taught 3rd grade. Someday I might want to try 4th or 5th grade, but for now I LOVE 3rd grade!

@ Cassidy,
I like our new post also! I think it gives a good idea of what our day is like.

I guess my favorite picture is also the recess picture because it shows how lucky we are to have such a great play area. That's why it is so important that we help our Ugandan friends keep their play area.

@ Justin and Aidan,
Awesome comment guys! I'll let my students answer most of your questions, but my favorite baseball team is the Red Sox. My second favorite team is whoever is playing the Yankees :)

@ Ryan,
Wow! What a fantastic, quality comment you left. It looks like a definite 2-pointer to me.

I'll answer a few of your questions: First, I love our smartboard. It is kind of like a giant iPhone or iPad because it is touchscreen and you can search the internet and watch videos on it. It's also like a whiteboard, except you don't have to erase everything, you can just save the screen as a file to use another day.

Our school does have some alphasmarts, but they don't have a typing program on them so the 4th grade mostly uses them for word processing.

Finally, we don't do reading counts but I wish we did because it seems like a great way to make reading fun.

From,
Mr. Salsich

Dear Mr. Salsich and class,

I love your slideshow! Your classroom looks amazing and is very organized too.

I have a question for you: do you have social studies? If yes, what are you learning about now?

I'm learning about erosion, which is changes in forms of land made by wind or water.

Warmly,
Ella in Mrs. Ranney's class
